If there is snow on the ground, the birds will hydrate with that. If no snow, and freezing temps, we place one 3 gallon water pan for every 100 birds. We have a water tank that gets pulled behind a tractor.

What do you do when the water freezes in the water pans?

Dump the ice out of the pans. When it gets really cold outside, birds should get watered multiple times to ensure they stay hydrated.

Plus one drinkers is an automatic drinker that runs on low pressure (less than 10 psi). Once it freezes, they stop working, and you are right, birds need to be watered by hand. This can be done using a 3 gallon rubber hog pan. The rubber makes it easier to dump the ice out. Once it snows, birds will eat that and no longer need to be watered. Snow is our friend (at least in smaller amounts!)
